Premier League

Premier League has confirmed it is to ban gambling sponsorship on the front of matchday shirts, with the move coming into effect from the beginning of the 2026/27 season.

The league said it had conducted “extensive consultation” with clubs – eight of which have betting firm sponsors – and the UK government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The Premier League is also working with other sports on the development of a “new code for responsible gambling sponsorship,” it said.

Culture secretary Lucy Frazer tweeted: “While the vast majority of adults enjoy gambling without harm, we can’t ignore the fact footballers are massive role models to kids.
Our upcoming gambling white paper will upgrade punter protections & do more to protect those at risk of addiction.”

Betway is the front-of-shirt sponsor for West Ham United. Everton, Bournemouth, Brentford, Southampton, Newcastle United, Leeds United and Fulham also count betting firms as sponsors.

James Grimes, founder of The Big Step campaign which aims to remove gambling advertising from football, hailed the move as a “big step.”

However, he said it is “totally incoherent” to allow clubs to move logos to a different part of the kit while allowing pitch-side advertising and continued league sponsorship.
