Saturday the 16th March saw the opening of the $1.2 billion Solaire Resort & Casino by Philippine President Benigno Aquino, which is the first of four such developments at the Entertainment City, on Manila Bay.

The aim of the resort is to introduce international casino resorts to the Philippines and bring them into the super leagues, along with Macau and Las Vegas.

“Macau and Singapore are always competing for bigger pieces of this industry’s very lucrative pie. Your presence in the country is proof positive that… above all else, the Philippines works,” Mr Aquino said in a speech to Entertainment City investors and others guests.

Enrique Razon who is a billionaire who made his money from sea ports owns the Solaire development, however the management of the resort is operated by Las Vegas-based Global Gaming Asset Management.

The casino resort has 300 gaming tables and 1,200 slot machines.

The building also has 500 hotel rooms.

There are plans already to extend the hotel capacity along with adding entertainment and shopping facilities.
