Great shows in times past
Along the years, many celebrated names in the movie and musical industry have been the guests of the casinos and performed great shows, never to be forgotten.
One of the idols in the 20th century, Marlene Dietrich, was the first German actress to taste fame in Hollywood. Between 1950 and 1970, the diva called ‚Blue Angel’ gave cabaret concerts hosted by the most exclusivist hotels and casinos in the biggest cities of the world.
Some of her shows that caused a real stir took place in the Congo Room, 520 seats, at the Sahara Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Thus, in December 1953, Marlene stunned the audience during the show when she wore a nude colored dress, which made her look almost au naturel. For three weeks, they paid her a huge salary, USD30,000 per week. Her show only featured a few songs but it still enjoyed a huge success. This will lead to her contract being renewed in Las Vegas and other places. In December 1954, Marlene celebrated her birthday at the same hotel and casino.
A pack of stars at Sahara
For many years in a row, Sahara Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas has been the stage where some of the greatest artists performed. Names like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Judy Garland, Paul Anka, Liza Minnelli, Shirley Bassey, Connie Francis, Bill Cosby and Ann Margret were filling up the place. In the 60’s, the original version of the ‚Ocean’s 11’ movie was shot at that site.
Not economically viable
Sahara Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas operated for 59 years, between 1952 and 2011. Currently, it is the property of SBE Entertainment and Stockbridge Real Estate, which are planning on reopening the location in 2014. The complete renovation will cost as much as $744 millions.
