An architectural masterpiece in Spain
The magnificent building was erected in 1887 in the Aldredi-Eder gardens to host a casino. Today, it serves as the City Hall’s administrative center.
No one can miss the City Hall in the Spanish locality of San Sebastian. The construction took from 1882 to 1887 to complete, and architects Aladren and Morales de los Rios designed it to host a Gran Casino. A true masterpiece of architecture, the building is emulating the cream of the casinos, which is Monte Carlo Casino. The beauty of the location is a magnet for millions of tourists visiting San Sebastian every year, who would not miss the opportunity of a souvenir picture taken with the building.
Grand opening
The San Sebastian Casino was opened in a lavish ceremony by Queen Maria Cristina of Habsburg. Unfortunately, the time when the building served as a space for gambling, luxury and entertainment was short-lived. In 1924, the gambling was banned and gates closed. The City Hall moved in here in 1945, from its former seat in Plaza de la Constitucion, after a change made to the initial floor plan. The inside access is not allowed any longer, but marriage ceremonies are held there.
