Romanians to be proud of

The year end meant two big Romanian victories in sport.  Viorel Simion defended his WBC International champion belt in the featherweight category, while Ionut ‚Pitbull’ Atodiresei became a WAKO Pro world champion, the first in the Romanian history.

Viorel Simion, 31, defeated the Filipino Ryan Sermona by TKO.  The encounter between the two has been the highlight of the ‚The seven invincibles’ gala in Craiova.  The fight of Simion, nicknamed ‚The Bomber’, against Sermona ended after four rounds only.  The Filipino has accused a sharp pain in his leg.

Close to KO

The Romanian player had one of his best days.  He was very close to KO Ryan Sermona in the second round of their game.  ‚Honestly, I am sorry that the game ended by a TKO, but most important is that I have won.  I am ready to fight anywhere’, said the beloved Romanian player after the fight.

All-time winner with the pros

Viorel Simion should be proud of his 16 victories in as many games in the professional arena.  Seven of them ended in KO.  After the Craiova victory, he is very much entitled to be called a mandatory challenger to the WBC belt, now in the possession of the Mexican Daniel Ponce de Leon.  According to Fight News, Simion went up the WBC ranking list in the featherweight category to the fourth position.

This year will be decisive for Simion.  Important fights are coming, against big names.  Should he is doing fine, he can go for the world title.  Simion could fight against Celestino Caballero, Panama, the second in the WBC featherweight category, a former double world champion.

‚Pitbull’ showed his teeth

The other victory came from the fighter Ionut ‚Pitbull’ Atodiresei.  He became a WAKO Pro world champion, first in Romania.  Atodiresei beat none other than Spanish Aitor Eguzkiza, the belt holder in the 64.5 kilogram class.  The game took place within the Local Kombat Gala in Onesti.

Won by the split decision

Five rounds into the game, the Romanian fighter won by the split decision.  The Spanish judge called his country fellowman a winner, while the Italian and Bulgarian ones opted for the Romanian Atodiresei.

On cloud nine

As already expected, Ionut ‚Pitbull’ Atodiresei was on top of the world after the game.  ‚My dream of being a world champion came true.  It is the outcome of a 20-year training’, he said.  ‚I am on cloud nine.  This has been one of the best years in my career.’
