The life story of a gambling magnate
American Sheldon Adelson, chairman of Las Vegas Sands, turned 79 on August 4. The casino magnate has lived an amazing life, starting from next-to-nothing and managing to have his fortune estimated now at around USD 24.9 billions.
Sheldon Adelson is one of the most successful and admired billionaires in the world. His name calls for respect and stirs admiration. He is nicknamed ‚The Casino King’, as his main source of wealth comes from gambling – an impressive fortune amounting to USD 24.9 billions. He is the CEO of Las Vegas Sands corporation, the mother-company of Venetian Macao Limited. Strong headed and ambitious, the American started from almost nothing but succeeded to become one of the greatest business people worldwide.
Born in Boston on August 4, 1933, Adelson made a living as a newspaper seller. He went to college, but he dropped out. The reason was his desire to start a charter tours business. The American started on his way up by organizing the first computer exhibition in USA, in Las Vegas. The first COMDEX edition took place in 1979 and it went on until 2003, being one of the most exhibitions of this kind worlwide.
Las Vegas Sands
In 1988, Adelson and his partners purchased the Sands Hotel and Casino, the favorite hangout for the great Frank Sinatra and other former Hollywood personalities. He really wished to bring in Las Vegas the bygone lustre. Later on, Sheldon built the Sands Expo and Convention Center, the only privately owned in USA at that time. Then, in the early 90’s, the American businessman razed Sands to erect a mega-resort hotel and a top-notch casino – ‚The Venetian’. He entered the gambling market in Macao, where he opened the first Las Vegas style casino, a successful project indeed.
At 79, Sheldon Adelson will not give up and he has got other mega-projects up his sleeve, including for Europe. The American magnate also owns the ‚Israel Ha Yom’ daily newspaper in Israel. He is actively involved in politics and charitable works, having made numerous donations to diverse foundations.
Met wife on a blind date
Since the 70’s, Sheldon Adelson has lived in Massachusetts with wife Sandra and their three adopted children: Mitchell, Gary and Shelley. The American billionaire has two more children. Adelson and Sandra divorced in 1988. Mitchel died of an overdose in 2005. Sheldon met his current wife, Miriam Ochsorn, on a blind date. He married her in 1991. Miriam is an Israeli physician.
