Police in Sicily, Italy, have uncovered an illegal online betting network with connections to Malta.
More than 100 individuals have been questioned about the fraud. Sicilian police said the websites involved handle millions of euros each month, with large sums laundered through complex online networks.
Thirteen suspects are being held under house arrest while 46 parties have had commercial assets seized, the police said.
Those under house arrest include a Maltese former police inspector and an individual with reported links to Italian organised crime.
The operation involved seven websites used for illegal online betting in Italy with gaming platforms registered in Malta.
The arrests were made at several cities across Italy, including Rome and Milan. No arrests are reported to have been made in Malta.
