Genting UK the second largest casino operator and part of Genting International are to close its Star City Casino in Birmingham, the iGaming Post reports. Staff were informed on November 16th of the decision and it is expected to close sometime in January 2017.
The casino company opened their latest resort at the Birmingham International Airport back in October 2015 called Resorts World at a cost of £150 million and at the time President of Genting UK Peter Brooks said he was very cautious over the development calling it an “experiment” and “an act of faith.”
Indeed Mr Brooks said that the company would never had invested in the casino resort had they known in advance of the regulatory difficulties and planning delays they were to suffer.
But the Star City casino which opened in 2003 and was at the time lauded as the biggest casino in the UK has over the years reduced its size and entertainment.
Speculation over the casino has been rife for months with the venue suffering falling revenues and competition.
It now seems that Genting UK are hoping that the closure will drive players to the Resort World Venue at Birmingham Airport.
