Online gambling revenue grow by 17.7 per cent year-on-year to €208.9m in Spain, in Q2 even it was heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Online casino and poker growth offset the drop in sports betting revenue caused by the cancellation of sporting events, although the number represented a drop of 4.2 per cent against the first quarter.
Suggestive of a shift from one vertical to another, online casino revenue rose 36.5 per cent year-on-year to €93.5m while sports betting revenue fell 20.8 per cent year-on-year and 38.4 per cent against the first quarter to €68.1m.
As for the online gambling revenue, most of the online casino revenue came from slots (€51.9m – up 30.4 per cent year-on-year and 19.9 per cent from Q1). Poker revenue rose 97.4 per cent year-on-year to €38.2m and live roulette revenue rose 75.7 per cent to €27m. Revenue from bingo rose 66.9 per cent to €5m.
Marketing spend dropped by 50.6 per cent year-on-year in the period to €40.6m due to the tight restrictions introduced by Madrid.
Advertising saw the biggest drop, down 57.6 per cent to €17.2m due to the introduction of rules on advertising only between 1am and 5am. Those restrictions are now due to be reimposed on a permanent basis.
Both the number of active customers and new sign-ups fell in the quarter by 35.4 per cent and 41 per cent year-on-year respectively.
