Casino Constanta is regaining its former glory

As we announced last year, the works for the rehabilitation of the Casino in Constanta started at the beginning of April 2020. The City Hall of Constanta issued on April 3, 2020 the construction authorization for the consolidation and restoration of the Casino Constanta.
The renovation began in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic, and the Minister of Development, Public Works and Administration, Cseke Attila hoped that this representative building will be handed over in its entire splendor in 2022. Now the rehabilitation work at Cazino Constanța is in full swing and is expected to be completed during 2024. Although it was supposed to be ready in the second half of this year, the problems encountered during the rehabilitation led to the postponement of the completion of the work.
At the end of the project, the Casino will re-enter in the tourist circuit and in the organization of events.
“The mobilization of the builder is good, the works are progressing well, even if we discover new problems, which were not revealed on the technical documentation, not being known, but we hope that in the second part of next year the Casino will be handed over in all its splendor, not only to the people of Constanta, but also to all those from the country and abroad who visit the Romanian coast “, said at the end of the visit, Cseke Attila.
“I think that many citizens from Romania know this Casino, they have seen this building, and through this investment we aim to put it back into operation, not only in the tourist circuit, because it will certainly be an attraction of the Romanian coast, but also the functionality of this Casino, which provides in the project the arrangement of an event hall, a museum of the Casino, a multifunctional hall, cinema and shows”.
The casino in Constanta was designed by architect Daniel Renard in Art Nouveau style. The birthday of the emblematic building is a contract concluded on July 23rd, 1903 by liberal mayor Cristea Georgescu with the architect Daniel Renard for the design of the new Casino. The political color of the administration changed quite often at the beginning of the 20th century. Selected by the Liberals to build this building, Renard is removed when the Conservatives came to power in 1905. The design of the Casino was then handled by the architect Petre Antonescu. In his view, the casino had a theater role. But the return of liberals to power between 1907 and 1908 makes Renard reinstate his Art Nouveau style. The superb building was inaugurated on August 15th, 1910, in the presence of Prince Ferdinand.

The last major repair of the Casino was made between 1986 and 1988. This fact was also mentioned by Cseke Attila.
“It is the most important building built in Art Nouveau style on the Romanian coast. The last intervention on the building took place in 1987 and we expect that next year, 35 years after the last restoration, the works on this investment will be completed”.
“The Constanta Casino is one of the most important investments made by the National Investment Company, not only by the financial value of the investment, which amounts to 56.6 million lei, but especially by the patrimonial, architectural and historical value of the Casino.”
The mayor of Constanța, Vergil Chițac declared: “After as long as the Casino was left in ruins, it is good that the Government of Romania has transformed this project, which is a local one, into a national one, managing to complete the procedures for awarding the works and to finance …. This building is a new Casino, the successor to the one from 1910.”
