The Westin Las Vegas is a resort and casino near the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The Westin is managed by Pyramid Hotel Group, under franchise from Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, owner of Westin Hotels. It is noteworthy for being one of the first Las Vegas resorts to prohibit smoking in almost all parts of the property; only in a part of the casino is smoking permitted.
The property was originally opened on July 1, 1977 as the Maxim Hotel and Casino. The Maxim was the site of the shooting death of rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996. Shakur was a passenger in a BMW that was driving in front of the casino, when a man in a Cadillac pulled up and opened fire, gravely wounding the rap star. He died a week later from his injuries.
In 1999, the casino was closed in a dispute between the casino operator and hotel owners. The hotel itself remained open without gaming until closing entirely in 2001. Columbia Sussex bought the former Maxim for $38 million then spent an additional $90 million on the remodel. They reopened the hotel as The Westin Casuarina on November 6, 2003. In November 2010, lenders filed for foreclosure on The Westin Casuarina, after Columbia Sussex stopped making payments on the property’s $160 million mortgage in April. The hotel was later renamed The Westin Las Vegas. It announced in 2016 that it will phase out its casino facilities and operate purely as a hotel.
Westin Las Vegas Hotel Casino features enjoyable facilities such as a casino, relaxing spa and on-site dining options and it offers a state-of-the-art fitness centre and a heated, outdoor swimming pool. After an intense workout, guests can relax with a massage in the Hibiscus Spa.
Savona Bristo restaurant at the Las Vegas Westin serves American cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Guests can also enjoy a private meal from the hotel’s 24-hour room service or have a snack in the 24-hour Casino Lounge.
The casino floor has fewer than 300 slot and video poker machines and only ten table games, far smaller than Strip mega resorts and even smaller than many casinos catering to local residents. In a city where even the convenience store down the street has a casino, The Westin just couldn’t look itself in the mirror if didn’t offer gambling. The Westin’s casino, dubbed the Max Casino in November 2013 with much fanfare, is petite by Las Vegas casino standards. The gaming floor is small, but doesn’t feel second-rate. There are 10 table games – blackjack, roulette, craps and more. The Westin casino has its own rewards program called MaxRewards.
At the end of last year, the Westin Las Vegas Hotel, Casino & Spa announced that it is looking to ditch its “off-strip” resort label and simply be a hotel. Rooms at the property will be completely renovated to “Starwood” standard, a restaurant will be added, and the pool will be expanded. Until now, this has not happened yet.
