Rumours in Swansea that the Grosvenor Casino would step into the soon to be vacated premises of former casino Aspers have been rejected by the company.
The city’s Grosvenor Casino in High Street had been linked to a move to the now empty site of the former Aspers casino in Wind Street.
But a Rank spokeswoman for the venue has said the rumours are false and categorically denied any suggestion of a move from its current location, also Grosvenor have re-iterated its intention to invest in its current city centre site.
A spokeswoman for Grosvenor Casinos said: “We constantly review available premises and are aware that the Aspers site is currently available. However, at the moment we have no plans to move and we are investing further in the existing Grosvenor Casino in Swansea.”
Aspers Casino closed at the end of last month after five years of business in the city.
The closure affected a total of 80 staff with 20 being redeployed to Aspers’s sister site at Westfield Stratford City in London.
A total of 60 people lost their jobs after the casino closed following a statement from the parent firm claiming the business was no longer financially viable.
At the time, Tony Irving, general manager of Grosvenor Casino, Swansea, said: “The Grosvenor Casino chain is thriving because we take great care to listen to customers and constantly refine our clubs to meet their changing needs” and he stressed: “With the range of entertainment options available in modern society it is vital for us to be ahead of trends, introducing new gaming formats such as electronic roulette, plus making sure that our team gives visitors the best welcome in town”.
He also declared: “We have a team of 80 and we are hoping that some of the local Aspers team will apply to us for jobs when their club closes.”
