French Gambling Regulator L’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) has announced it is to toughen policies on gambling to protect the rise in problem gambling within the country.
An increase in gambling revenue by online gaming operators during the pandemic along with what the regulator says is a worrying increase in registered problem gamblers from 200,000 back in 2014 to now over 370,000 last year is the reason behind the move.
The regulator says new public policies are needed to curb the increase of problem gambling in the country, however the regulator has not mentioned any specific new policies towards online gambling.
It is believed the ANJ will work with other government bodies to formulate strategies toward curbing the rise of underage gambling also, however no timeframe or mentioning of what areas the regulator will look at strengthening have been discussed.
A decree formalising the transition of power came into force on 4 March, with ANJ to officially become the country’s new regulator.
ANJ replaced the former gambling regulator, Autorité Nationale de regulation des jeux en ligne (ARJEL).
ANJ acts as the sole institution overseeing gambling in the country, including online gambling, casinos, horse racing in Paris and lottery games.
