In Romanian culture, Santa Claus is a character with bivalent features: he has miraculous powers, specific to gods and heroes from fairy tales, but also qualities and flaws specific to humans. As a profane person, he is an old man, an old shepherd with a man’s beard, neighbor to Moş Ajun, his younger brother. Under the influence of Christianity, Christmas also appears as an apocryphal figure: he was born before all the saints, he is greater than the shepherds in the village where Christ was born and others.
The Nativity legends paint the ethnographic landscape of a pastoral village where Santa Claus lived and had large houses, stables, baskets and cattle pens. Unexpectedly, an unknown woman arrives in this quiet village who, feeling that the time has come for her to give birth, knocks on the door of Moş Ajun’s house and asks him to stay. Reasoning that he is a poor man, he sends her to his rich brother, Santa Claus. He, not knowing that the woman is the Mother of God, does not receive her or sends her to give birth in the cattle stable.
The Christmas woman helps the stranger to give birth, a deed punished by Christmas with cutting off her hands at the elbows. When Santa finds out that Jesus was born in his stable, he repents and asks God for forgiveness, becoming the first Christian, the oldest saint, the husband of the woman who inherited Mary.
At the advent of Christianity, Christmas was such a revered god that it could not be completely excluded from the Popular Calendar and from the consciousness of people who had adopted faith in Christ. Through everything it does, Christmas opposes or prevents the birth of the baby Jesus because His coming first presupposes the departure (death) of Santa, the contemporary traditions about the generous and good Santa, loaded with many gifts, being bookish influences penetrated into popular culture.
At Christmas, a series of certified practices take place in all areas of the country, centered around carols and ritual meals.
Christmas is also called the family holiday; it is the occasion when everyone gets together, parents, children, grandchildren and give each other gifts, enjoy the moments spent together around the table, with the belief that by properly honoring the holidays they will have a richer new year.
