A new casino opened its doors during the Holidays in Syria, being, in fact, the only one since the 1970s, when gambling was forbidden in this country. The new casino, by its name Ocean Club, operates with no official license, but its clients are mostly very rich Syrians. The Ocean Club Casino is situated near the airport of Damascus.
Only a few weeks after its opening, the new casino is already facing the threat of being closed, pursuing the persistent actions of the religious conservatives, the same ones who 40 years ago influenced the decision to outlaw gambling in Syria.
The casino is run by Khaled Houboubati, the sun of Tawfiq Houboubati, owner of three casinos in the 1970s, one of which situated right on the spot of the current Ocean Club.
