A YOUNG MAN THAT GETS ALL THE MONEY WORTH

August 2010

My dear readers, do you happen to know about the young Mihai Manole? Have you heard of him? Have you heard of his cars? Have you heard of his showing off? Have you heard of the women he changes between two cups of coffee? Haven’t you? How come? Precisely in a country where every plain-headed, having some money in his pockets, passes for a big personality? Hmm, that’s curious… Well, then I will tell you about Mihai Manole, and not because I am an exaggerate nationalist, but because I am surprised that our country still has young people who know about common sense and character. Mihai was born in Târgoviste and after finishing high-school he came to Bucharest to study IT, at Politehnica. He spent time on the internet, like all the young people, days and nights, and one day he discovered the poker game. He fell deeply in love and he set his mind upon succeeding. One step at a time, he fell more in more into the poker world, he watched poker stars playing and he started to play online free rolls, whenever he had time to play. All went good for him, he took heart and he wanted more. “I said to myself that I must try a live tournament”, Mihai says. That’s how he took a sit at a table, barely after two years since he learned the game. In 2007, in St. Kitts, he won 120.000 dollars at Caribbean Poker Classic. Next summer he won another 150.000 dollars. In September 2009, Mihai got on the 4th place at EPT Barcelona Main Event, winning 350.000 dollars. Totally, he put aside over 1 million dollars, money that he won with his own hand, with his own skills and with his own courage and talent. Do you think the reason why I told you about Mihai Manole is the money he raised? Certainly not! The reason why I told you his story was that, a few days ago, talking to this child who has just signed a contract with the most renowned professional poker team in the whole world, Full Tilt Poker, he has proven a common sense and a modesty that knocked me out. He was telling me about work, a lot of work, seriousness and perseverance. Some people, who think they know everything, can’t even understand all these words…

Anthony Holden – THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF POKER

August 2010

Ever since the explosion of poker at the beginning of the 21st century, attempts have been made to organize players, either through a governing body or an organization to impose changes in the game, with varying degrees of success. In April, a meeting in Lausanne attracted seven poker federations – from Denmark, France, Holland, United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine and Brazil – to undertake the task of creating a worldwide poker federation.

From this meeting was born the International Federation of Poker. As the first President of the organization was elected noted author Anthony Holden, who has written “Big Deal“ and “Bigger Deal“ and traveled around the globe playing poker.

Questioned by Poker News Daily about the chances for success of the IFP, Holden said that these are “as promising as they are exciting”. He also noted that what differentiates IFP from the previous organizations is that itís the first governing body, properly structured as a Sports Federation. “The IFP is a not-for-profit organization with its head office in Lausanne, Switzerland, the global headquarters of international sports federations and the International Olympic Committee. It is subject to the Swiss Civil Code and will be arbitrated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, also in Lausanne.

This is a major step towards securing recognition of pokerís status as a sport”, Holden added. The most important goal of the IFP is to form a comprehensive governing body comprised of national federations from around the world. “We have identified governing bodies in more than 20 countries outside of our founding members and we are confident that our membership will grow quickly and steadily in the coming months. We hope to have 30 member nations by the end of this year” Holden said. He noted that the Federation is in advanced discussions about membership with Romania, as well. Every member nation will have a representative on the Congress, the supreme authority of the Federation, and all the nations in IFP have equal rights, no matter the size of the nation, on the basis of a “One Country, One Vote” policy. Asked about the greatest challenge for the IFP, Holden admitted hat it has to fight “the stigma that governments and the non-poker playing public attaches to poker”, seeing it only as a gambling activity, and not as a skilled mind-sport. “We have had promising talks with the International Mind Sports Association in Paris, currently consisting of the international federations of Bridge, Chess, Draughts, and Go. We are optimistic about joining this organization later in the year, and, once we do, we will have official recognition as a mindsport“, Holden concluded.

Tournament poker – THE STRATEGY

August 2010

From a backroom game, poker has become a new fashion today, thanks to the big tournaments broadcasted on television. The most attractive part in poker nowadays is the tournaments, but, as attractive as they may be, the tournaments involve also a different strategy. A successful tournament player needs to understand that his life in a tournament is his chips. The most important is to learn how to protect them in all the basic stages of the tournament early, middle and late. In the early stage everybody feels comfortable and have a lot of chips in relation to the blinds and thereís a very small probability that players go for large amounts of chips or even all-in. The idea is to make it through the early stage with average or above chips, giving you room to maneuver as you enter the middle stage. The middle stage will range from being deep-stacked at the start (lots of chips compared to blinds) to short-stacked near the end. In this stage chips are quickly becoming more valuable, each round of blinds potentially bringing you one step closer to elimination. It’s at this point you can no longer afford to sit around waiting for only the best hands. The late stage will have many players with very few chips, and a few players with a lot of them. This is the time of a tournament when everyone’s willing to gamble. Once they’re in the money, people no longer care about going bust and are aiming for the win at all times. You need to play very aggressively, make few or no mistakes, and get lucky at the right times to have a shot at the title. Luck is always a part of poker, and in tournaments it becomes a large factor of the game in the later stages.

10 FOR COSMINA PASARIN – „Life is short, so let’s whoop it up!”

August 2010

Cosmina Pasarin is, by default, a nonconformist. She likes to travel, she likes sports, she likes men with a sense of humor, but not very possessive, she likes live television and she likes movies. By consequence, she had her existence ranged according to the precept: life is short, so let’s whoop it up!”.

DO YOU THINK THAT CELEBRITY AND BEAUTY BEAR MONSTERS IN PEOPLE’S MINDS?

Considering the fact that people sometimes react very strange, yeah, I think so. Generally speaking, the more famous you are, the more judged you are. And I’m not the only one saying that. Honestly, there’s no advantage in being very famous. The others judged you without sparing your feelings, they drive you into a corner unscrupulously, and you fight all by yourself with their preconceptions and stand the racket. I think it’s not very fair…

BUT YOU ARE TRYING TO MAKE A SPLASH, TO AROUSE YOUR “JUDGES”?

Not at all. I am a person that has always mind its own business and I think this is the right formula. If I was to burden myself with all the preconceptions of those around me, I would have lost my moral and mental stability. I stick to my business, I still want to work in television, even though most of the time, I get hog-tied, like it happened, recently, with TVR. But eventually, things work out well.

BACK TO YOUR INCIDENT, IN TVR. WHAT REALLY HAPPENED, THAT SERIOUS THAT YOU HAD TO PUT AN END TO YOUR COLLABORATION WITH THEM?

The tabloids brought out some pictures with me on a stage, holding a microphone and dancing. I was, actually, performing as an MC, a project I have for four years now. When I started to work with TVR, they knew very well about this part of my activity. But the papers also published a title that would put a stain onto anybody’s image. This aroused the reaction of TVR and all those things led to immediately putting an end to my collaboration with them, even before starting the sea side season of my show, “Tonomatul de pe 2” (“The Jukebox on 2”). As you know, I was accused of having an indecent, inadequate behavior, a charge that I considered, at least exaggerate. Many people where on my side, a lot of people called me and supported me, all of them considering that what happened with me was unfair.

DID TVR LAND ON THE FACT THAT YOU ARE MC?

No, they already knew that. They landed on my behavior. But to do this job, you need a few things cheerfulness, a good voice, dancing, energy. You cannot challenge people to have fun, at night, in a club, standing like a rock. Under these circumstances, I go on the stage, I dance, I have entertainers, DJs, a whole team to work with. When you challenge people to have fun, it’s obvious you must have a breezy attitude, but certainly not coarse and indecent, like they accused me. Therefore, I was dancing with a microphone in my hand and here I am, forced to justify myself for this; to me it’s absurd. Honestly, I think this was just a pretext.

I TEND TO THINK YOU ARE RIGHT, SINCE WE’RE TALKING ABOUT TVR, AND NOT ABOUT TRINITAS TV.

Eventually, this was their decision and I accepted it. What bothered me was that this story led to a press scandal that, I must admit, I didn’t need. I am a person that accepts and understands a lot of things, and I think that if we have had an explanatory conversation, it would have been more honest, and I wouldn’t have to go through all these. And I think that this scandal was far from doing them, also, any good. I repeat, my opinion is that they needed a pretext to take the show of the scheme. After having me removed, they put an end to the whole show. That’s a shame, because that was a good show, with tradition.

AS YOU SAID, THE FAME, THE BEAUTY AND THE FACT THAT YOU ARE A PUBLIC PERSON DOESN’T ALWAYS HELP. DID YOU EXPERIENCE OTHER THINGS LIKE THAT?

Never. This was the first time, and that’s why I didn’t know how to react. But I easily understood that I cannot be a winner in fighting with people’s preconceptions and with their rigid mindsets. On the other hand, I don’t want to tempt the providence I use to say that there are many women more beautiful than I am but, most of the times, the outside beauty makes people think that you’re either shallow, or not very smart. In few words, they gave you less credibility. And that’s because, as I was saying, we live in a country of judges.

DO WE FIND, AMONGST THESE JUDGES, SOME OF THE MEN YOU KNEW?

Yes. Unfortunately, everybody judges everybody. I happened to know also men who judged me.

BESIDE THE ANNOYANCE THAT YOU FELT, I KNOW THAT THE DISTASTEFUL EPISODE, HAD ALSO ITS GOOD CONSEQUENCES…

Well… yes. A little while after that episode, I got some proposals. Three, actually. I don’t want to give you the details now, but I’m talking about three televisions, that offered me three completely different projects. This turnout made me very happy, the more so as a scandal like this leaves marks. You know how it is, you do ten good things and a bad one, the people will remember the bad one, and by no means the good ones.

SINCE WE ARE IN ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS CASINOS IN BUCHAREST, I’M ASKING YOU: HAVE YOU EVER TRIED YOUR FORTUNE AT A GAMBLING TABLE?

No. I have never played, because I don’t know the rules. I don’t have an experience and, therefore, what you don’t know, does not tempt you. But still, I have a close connection with casino world, being many times invited to various events, as an MC. Three weeks ago, I have offered as a prize from a casino, a two bedroom apartment.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE GOALS FOR COSMINA PASARIN?

I want to go on with my job as an MC. It’s a very good project for me, one that makes a living for me. It’s tiresome, but, in the end, one does not always do what one likes. Besides this, I want to work in television I have become addicted to live shows and movies. I played in three TV series, in a feature film directed by Serban Marinescu after a screenplay signed Mircea Danieliuc, and in another feature film, with Steven Seagal, where I played a bad girl…

Mumm Lingerie by Catalin Botezatu – LUXURY, CHAMPAGNE AND LIGHTS IN CLUB LE GAGA

August 2010

For Catalin Botezatu, the summer of 2010 is marked by luxury and fashion presentation by the seashore.

Even if in parallel he is shooting for the costly TV production “Burlacul” (The Bachelor), presented by Antena 1, Catalin Botezatu took the time to design and make new collections of lingerie and haute couture. Just one month after the Bucharest Fashion Week, event within which he launched two new collections of bathing suits, Avatar and Nuns, Catalin Botezatu presented in club Le Gaga, in Bucharest, a new mixed collection of lingerie and bathing suits, Mumm Lingerie by Catalin Botezatu. The designer, now acting as ambassador of Mumm, put together a set of more than 30 clothing items rich in accessories, accompanied by jewels, veils, gloves and extravagant shoes. The catwalk in Le Gaga thus hosted an elegant show. Against the background of a collage of retro songs, two models, dressed in tuxedos, smoking cigars in relaxation, opened up two bottles of exclusive champagne Mumm, offering to the ladies who would climb on the catwalk a glass of the famous drink. The models presented to the public the new collection Mumm Lingerie by Catalin Botezatu, covered in black veils with discrete flowery imprints, veils with multicolor feathers at their extremities, accompanied by black, red or white leather gloves, necklaces and earrings with semi-precious stones.

COSTUMES IN THE SEA OF…CAMERA FLASHES

The models maintained their soberness and mystery all they way to the end of the catwalk where, to the lens of the cameras and sea of camera flashes, they revealed to the public sensual costumes, of fine silk with lace, broidery and Swarovski stones, bold cuts but also classic designs. The models displayed a make-up especially designed by Mirela Vescan, in tone with the high and flowery line of the hair made by Laurent Tourette. The lashes and eyebrows were extended by means of African cock colored feathers, emphasizing femininity, as well as mystery. The footwear was designed by Catalin Botezatu for Veronesse in the same bold tone, the braces being enriched with applications of black African cock feathers. In order to symbolize the practical, straightforward character of men, the male models made use of no accessories, but went up on the catwalk wearing just lingerie and sipping out of a glass of Mumm champagne.

BOTE, TANIA AND MUMM CHAMPAGNE

The ending of the presentation was a successful sum-up of the entire event. One of the highest models, Tania, further elevated on shoes up to 1.93 cm tall, went up on the catwalk covered by a fox fur coat, accompanied by a necklace executed with generous Swarovski stones. The lingerie item was covered in over 200 Swarovski stones which conferred the creation elegance and maximum luxury. The model was accompanied on the catwalk by Catalin Botezatu. The designer opened loudly a bottle of champagne Mumm with which he served the bride of the collection in the applauses of the more than 500 people present in Le Gaga. The collection Mumm Lingerie by Catalin Botezatu is an exclusive one, just like the Mumm brand itself and can be acquired based on order. And, since I mentioned his full schedule with the shootings for the TV show “The Bachelor”, held in Romania and abroad, Catalin was forced to give instructions by telephone, from Danube Delta, to the team preparing in Bucharest a high-end show, based on the concept of “decadent luxury”. On the catwalk, the models entered a game of seduction, seasoned to the full with the high-end Mumm champagne. One of the elegant dresses was worn for the first time at Cannes, by Irina Florea, brand manager Pernod Ricard, who also took part in the event held at Le Gaga. The seaside sows started with a mixed fashion show, held at Cafe del Mar beach, in Mamaia. Under the clear sky, at 33 Celsius degrees, in the middle of the day, was staged a special show, combining the idea of extreme luxury, through the elegant masculine suits and the evening dresses, with the bold parade of the most beautiful male models in Romania, all dressed up in underwear and accessories like leather gloves, knee sox and boxes of G.H. Mumm champagne.

Simona – A snow of flowers

August 2010

Just like a snow of flowers, Simona lays from an end to another of the luck. She blooms in red petals, she weaves herself in strands of sand, that have forgotten their last tempest. Simona gathers around her snows a sheet of blue sky, for the light in her eyes to be easier to see. The smile that takes a chance in the arch of the roulette, at a running dice, for a queen in a royal flush hidden in a imaginary cuff. The nights of the casinos are always laying at the feet of her red snows, to take out of the pack the queen of spades. Those who got lucky in the long nights, will leave with her in their thoughts, to find her again and again, among the aces of the unfinished duels.

MIHAI MANOLE – The power to work and the seriousness have helped me to climb up to here

August 2010

THE ROMANIAN THAT ENTERED THE FULL TILT POKER DREAM TEAM

FullTiltPoker.net, the most famous and visited poker site in the world has a new partner – Romanian Mihai Manole. A professional poker player, Mihai will be, starting today a part of the Full Tilt Poker pros team, becoming thus the brand’s ambassador on the Romanian market. He is the first Romanian poker player that managed to rank on the third place at Las Vegas WSOP.

MIHAI, WHICH IS, IN YOUR OPINION, THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL FOR A POKER PLAYER?

I can’t talk about one single skill. But the most important, I think, is the discipline. Then, there comes the work, the seriousness, the perseverance.

WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THESE ALL, IN YOUR CASE?

The power to work, in the first place. Then, it was the seriousness. I liked this game very much and this gave me the power to work.

HOW WAS YOUR FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH THIS SPORT?

It was six years ago, in a hostel, in Regie. After having assimilated some exams, coming from Targoviste to Bucharest, I had more spare time. And so, sitting in front of the computer, like all students do, I found a poker site and I liked it very much. I like challenges and ever since that moment I felt that this is a sport where I can have big results.

“I am happy to have succeeded, once again, to sit at a final table, after two years. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to win, even though I wanted the victory so much. It would have been an extraordinary thing for me to win the first bracelet for Romania and to hear the national anthem sung at Pavilion Room. I am honored and I want to thank the Full Tilt Poker team for the trust they put in me”, Manole said in a press conference held at Radisson Hotel, in Bucharest.

DID YOU DECIDE THEN TO COMPETE IN LIVE EVENTS?

Yes, I did. Even though at that time I was only playing on the internet, I was still watching various movies with the founders of Full Tilt, and I enjoyed them a lot. That was when I thought I want to play at least in one tournament. Then many, and after that I proposed myself to win a tournament. That’s how I progressed, step by step.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A FULL TILT PARTNER?

Here, on Eastern Europe, we have one of the richest CV’s and a good track record, which they have noticed. I’m happy for the partnership they proposed me.

WHAT IS YOUR GOAL FOR THE NEAR FUTURE?

By all means, to win a big tournament. Starting 10th of August, I have a very consistent schedule and I hope I’ll do a good job.

MANILA POKER – THE FAMOUS AUSTRALIAN POKER

August 2010

“Manila” or “Seven-Up” is a poker version of Texas Hold’em, otherwise among the most popular games in Australian casinos.

This version is played with only 32 cards, from 7 upwards (wherefrom the name of Seven Up). After placing the blinds, each player receives two individual cards, and then, during the game, a further five community cards will also be placed. Each of the five is turned at a time and is followed by a round of bets. At each round of bets the ones at the table need to decide what they want to do next, the variants being to call (equaling the sums bet previously), to call and raise (equaling the sums and raising), or fold (withdrawing without showing the cards). After the fifth round of betting, the cards are shown. Each player needs to have, in the end, the best hand by using both his cards and three on the table, as opposed to Texas Hold’em.

POKER WITH VARIATIONS

Among the usual variations of this game there is also one in which three individual cards are distributed to the players, out of which one can be disposed at a given moment, or it can be kept, but there is still the requirement that each player make up a hand with the two cards he holds and the three common cards. This version is sometimes played with 36 cards. Manila also features the variant Pinatubo in which there are only four rounds of bets and not five, as in this case there is no longer a betting round between common cards 2 and 3. The order of the hands is the same for all poker variants, with the only note that, at Manila, Flush beats the Full-house. Moreover, the Aces cannot be used as small card. The game can be played with a big number of players, but the ideal variant for a game is with 6 to 9 players. You must not be tricked by the fact that you have big cards, but remember that when you play Manila everybody at the table has big cards! One of the great poker tours in the world in which Manila is played is the famous Aussie Millions Australian Poker Championship, which is held each year at Crowne Casino in Melbourne.

Top 3 biggest yachts a new champion

August 2010

The ego of a billionaire cannot truly be satisfied unless the properties he takes pride in also include at least one yacht. And if the yacht is part of top three biggest yachts in the world, all for the better. But this top is about to change together with the presentation of the newest concept for such a vessel.

1. PROJECT 100

ONLY FOR THE RICHEST OF THE RICH

Project 100, created by a team of Belgian designers, will not only be the biggest, but also the most luxurious and most extravagant yacht in the world, worthy of a king’s collection. Although it will be launched to water five years from now, the world’s billionaires are keeping an eye on the manufacturers, standing ready to withdraw from their accounts a sum ranging between 640 million and one billion dollars, depending on the features chosen, for this naval jewel. “When you are used to living in a palace, surrounded by dozens of servants, you don’t want to embark on a cruise on board a small yacht” says Berkeley March, the architect who designed the yacht. As such, March is not afraid the vessel will not sell. “The recession has not changed wealthy people’s impression that size does matter and, with or without the economic crisis, the ego is the one that dictates” he believes. The yacht designed by the Emocean Company will span a length of 200 meters, as much as two football fields put together. It will allow fitting a garage, two 30meter pleasure boats, a heliport and a hangar for the helicopter. If the owner desires so, the vessel allows fitting a 30-meter long pool, a night club, a casino and a game room, a two-level cinema, three open-air clubs and a fitness center, 10 VIP rooms, 22 guest rooms and a separate deck for the owner. And all these can be fitted with golden furniture and interiors. The vessel can accommodate 45 passengers and 70 crew members.

2. ECLIPSE

When ready, the yacht will exceed the Eclipse vessel, owned by the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the current holder of the title of world’s biggest yacht, with a length of nearly 170 meters. The vessel cost in excess of 350 million Euros and is now estimated at more than 1.2 billion. What truly makes this yacht special is the missile detection system, military type, and a small

A FLOATING BUNKER submarine. It also features two landing pads for helicopters, a spa and an open air pool. Roman Abramovich, the owner of the floating jewel, ordered a special protection system. All windows to his apartment are bulletproof and the walls are reinforced like an anti-atomic bunker. But because after all, the yacht is no military base, the Russian billionaire bought 35 items of contemporary art to decorate it, works for which specialists speculate he paid several dozen million Euros. Eclipse includes six guest rooms, five for VIPs and a cabin destined to Abramovich himself, with garden and a grand piano. All rooms are fitted with dedicated bathroom and balcony. Furthermore, the yacht includes a mini-theater and a cinema hall, a party hall, three dining halls, a club, an aquarium, pool, a fitness center, sauna and minispa. The temperature and humidity are controlled for the wine store room. Moreover, there are two kitchens and rooms that can accommodate up to 100 crew members, as well as a mini-hospital for Abramovich’s medical team. Abramovich’s yacht weighs 13,000 tons, the engine produces an output of 20,000 horse-power, and the construction took 4 years.

3. DUBAI

THE YACHT OF WATER SPORTS

The last position of the podium is occupied by a yacht owned by the Mayor of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The vessel, bearing the name of the city run by the mayor, measures 162 meters in length and cost 300 million dollars. The attention for details in decorations seems to have come before the size of the yacht. Thus, beside the three elevators that guests can use to reach the various decks of the vessel, glass stairs were fitted to lead to the VIP apartments and restaurants located in open-air or inside. Here guests can also find several pools, beach areas and a basin for water sports. Most spaces are protected and air conditioning is operating at full capacity. And because the owner is keen on water sports, the vessel features all sorts of accessories required for diving. In addition to all these there are also submarines, superjets, air-inflated boats or motor boats.
