POKER WITH LIONS

June 2009

More and more sport VIPs are giving up the activities of physical strength to take up disciplines requiring psychological strength. Ever since poker has become a popular sport, important names sit around the green lining table inside the great casinos of the world in order to participate in very exciting tours, through their atmosphere and prizes, some of them quite fabulous.

The newest professional Romanian poker player is no other than the former world boxing champion and rally racing pilot, Mihai Leu. It’s of little importance where the first tour attended by Leu took place. Nor does it matter whether he made a profit out of it or not. But it is important what he declared after the tour: “I missed the adrenalin, the tension…” The former holder of the diamond belt and rally pilot finds in a sport which may first seem quite inactive the lost adrenaline, which he finds in a rather discrete and even mysterious manner. It’s quite significant to see this state of facts coming from a “steel” sportsman, from all points of view, regardless of the fact that Mihai has the required elegance to cool down his inner volcano, day in and day out. For the noninitiated, the comparison between card playing and extreme sports – not to say extremely tough sports -, which are represented by boxing or/and the insane roar of horse-power during a rally session, could seem at least comical.

Well, here is proof of the opposite, supported by a man who wanted and still wants important doses of adrenalin. What did Mihai Leu bring along in poker from the other disciplines he practiced? Well, fortitude, passion for competition, inner balance of the competitor, a remarkable spirit of observation, the exceptional courage to make very important decisions in split seconds, a certain doze of fairplay, necessary even in a game where bluffing is common practice – bluffing representing many times the fight you undertake against bad luck. And apart from all these, it also takes some brain skills: intelligence, memory, imagination, patience, acting spirit.

Would you have ever thought that a poker player, seemingly almost asleep under his big sunglasses, seated lazily at a table corner, needs such an elaborate and complete set of characteristics? If you would have, then good for you! If not, let me tell you that the opponent doesn’t always hold the small cards…

Andreea Necula

June 2009

Sponsored by some of the most renowned casinos in the country Andreea Necula wants to become the ace of Romanian rally pilots.

Tan Tolga Cebeci, an old acquaintance of our magazine, has initiated a new project. Through his publicity agency he managed to create a bridge between the domain he was and still is involved in – gambling industry, casinos – and rally racing. A recipe with spectacular ingredients which will surely lead to benefits for both sides, sign of a successful business.

The red Logan driven by Andreea Necula has stickers with the logos of the most successful casinos in Romania. Who is Andreea?! A young, beautiful, elegant and courageous lady. Qualities to be enjoyed by all the fans of rally racing.

In turn, Andreea is supported in her sporting endeavor through the sponsorship project advanced by the casinos and put into practice by Tan Tolga.

THE CASINOS GO OUT IN THE WORLD ON THE BODY OF THE LOGAN DRIVEN BY ANDREEA

“We support Andreea for the participation in the 2009 Rally – the eighth stage, in Romania – as well as for the Bucharest Ring circuit. She is the only woman pilot involved in these races, at the moment, within the country, and she does it with success” says Tan Tolga.

He considers that the world of rally racing is like the world of football, “a sport for men”. “The same happens in the world of rally racing.

It’s not unusual to see beautiful women present at rally racing events, but this is the first time when a woman is actually participating in the rally. As such, my intention is to support her. She is a person really keen on racing; she’s not in it for the money, but for the pleasure and fun. But Tolga won’t stop here. He aims much higher.

“The next level that I am considering will lead Romania and its major brands under international focus.

Currently, Europe has a great potential and we would like to get involved in such projects. And, by all means, we would like to evolve to a superior car class, superior engine capacity, and become more powerful on the market of automotive sports”. How did he come up with the idea?! “Before having my own agency, I participated in Dacia Logan Cup at Bucharest Challenge in 2007, being involved in sponsorship actions. I saw how powerful the feedback was,” declared Tan Tolga Cebeci.

THE ACE UP THE… SLEEVE

If you see the young Andreea Necula on the podium, as fashion model, you can hardly imagine a direct connection between her and a horse-power tamer. You could at most associate her with the luxury of a limousine, stepping off from the passenger seat at classy events.

And still, Andreea is a very talented rally pilot, as well as being a much appreciated model. “Yes, I am a model, but I can now say that I am also a pilot and I’ve been participating in rallies since 2008. I became aware of this passion when I was 16, a time when I learned to drive. At 18 I got my drivers license, then I hang out with a bunch of guys with whom I went around the city at various races organized in various circumstances at that time. In 2007 I decided to legally participate in rally racing” says Andreea. The attraction towards this sport, says the 24- year old girl, come from the fact that she was rather a boy to her family. “I’ve always liked cars. When I was small I used to collect toy model cars made of iron. I can’t recall having a doll my entire childhood.

Then, I observed my father’s sporting style of driving. He was a better driver than my colleagues and friends. All these lead to trigger my passion for cars” says Andreea.

The consequences were not as easy as collecting car models. “In 2007 I trained, I attended a pilot school and in 2008 I attended another one. I signed up in a club and got my license of professional beginner pilot. Now I can say I’m a junior pilot. I rented a car – the first car I competed with – a Renault Megane Coupe, 160 HP. I participated in 12 stages then. This year, I decided to race on Logan because I want to be part of the Challenge, at the Palace of the Parliament and then, in 2009, I want to participate in the Logan Cup within the Romanian Rally Competition. That’s basically a superior level compared to what I’m currently doing”. The most exciting race of Andreea’s was the stage of the rally held in Resita. “Sadly, one of our colleagues died there. It’s a technical course, very tough and for high speeds. I was the first to experience bad incidents but I finished the day on the podium, the third position. But my best performance was the 2nd position at Banat Cup”.

And because she drives a car full of stickers with casino logos, including the logo of our magazine, Andreea hopes to draw the lucky card in her piloting career and promises she will try to find out more about the activity of the casinos.

Gyula Csortán – THE MATHEMATICIAN OF GAMBLING INDUSTRY

June 2009

Gyula Csortán is the general manager of the company Alfastreet Trade Romania. A specialist who learned the secrets of the gambling industry as he went along. He is a math teacher, was born in Sfântu Gheorghe, graduated university in Budapest and makes money go round in Bucharest.

Mr. CSORTÁN, HOW DID THE HISTORY OF ALFASTREET ROMANIA BEGIN?

The owners of our company came to Romania a few years ago to find a gambling market under full development. They tested the opportunities, saw that the business could be developed and contacted Alfastreet in order to import the electronic roulettes.

They brought them in the country and they became very popular.

Then we changed the name of the company, setting up Alfastreet Trade Romania, a subsidiary of the mother company in Slovenia.

IN WHAT YEAR DID YOU SET UP THE ROMANIAN SUBSIDIARY?

Last year, in April. The company that was operating in Romania and selling Alfastreet roulettes had become an exclusive dealer for this product.

We thought of changing the name in order to create a visible link to the mother company and the object of our activity.

WHEN DID YOU BECOME A GENERAL MANAGER OF THE COMPANY?

In November 2008. Before that, I used to be the technical manager of the company. I coordinated everything related to the technical business of the business: mounting the roulettes, ensuring in-warranty service and coordinating the team of technicians.

HOW MANY SUCH ROULETTES MADE BY ALFASTREET DID YOU SELL IN ROMANIA?

The number is made up of many hundreds. I can’t tell you the exact figure.

WHICH IS YOUR MOST VALUED CLIENT?

Ritzio. We sold them more than 100 machines. Last year alone they bought approximately 70-80 roulettes from us. Olympic is another important client.

THE ELECTRONIC ROULETTE, A PRODUCT THAT SELLS…

Like hot cakes I could say.

BUT WHAT IS THE SITUATION NOW THAT THE CRISIS IS AFFECTING EVERYONE?

It affects us too, to a certain extent, but not dramatically. In this period we focused our efforts on the service activity. We concluded contracts with the companies that bought products from us but had expired warranties. The contracts are subscription-type, either for repairs or periodic and occasional inspections. As previously said, we also ensure in-warranty service for the products bought through Alfastreet Romania. Furthermore, we provide spare parts imported directly from the producer.

ARE YOU THINKING OF VARYING THE RANGE OF IMPORTED PRODUCTS FOR DISTRIBUTION ON THE ROMANIAN MARKET?

Yes. We considered this aspect and decided to also import the booker-table. It hasn’t yet been released on the market, but we presented it in December to our clients. The moment it is officially released, we will make a serious promotion.

YOU HOPE IT WILL BE AS POPULAR WITH THE GAME PARLORS AS THE ROULETTE?

To be honest, I am developing an entire marketing strategy based on this product. I am sure it will be on high demand.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES THE TEAM YOU LEAD INCLUDE? A TEAM WHICH, BY ALL APPEARANCES, IS HIGHLY DEMANDED.

Not very many. 10-12 people.

Indeed, very busy. We are now planning to hire some more technicians, once we extend the service activity. As far as the workload is concerned, we are lucky. Our roulette is on high demand within parlors. Players hold it as their favorite.

In very many locations, where there are several types of roulette, clients prefer our product.

WHAT IS YOUR BASE PROFESSION, MR. CSORTÁN?

I am a math teacher. I taught for 10 years in Sfântu Gheorghe, starting with year 1995. Then I was forced to leave the educational system. You know how the salaries are…

HOW DID YOU ADAPT TO THE ACTIVITY YOU ARE CURRENTLY DEVELOPING? WAS IT DIFFICULT?

Yes, it certainly was. I came from a totally different environment.

Then, when we started to sell the roulettes, we didn’t know the markets. I learned each single part of the machines from the technicians.

WHAT ARE YOUR FURTHER OBJECTIVES?

For me, this position is a great challenge. I thought a great deal of what I have to do. General management is totally different from the technical section, where I worked ever since I joined this field of activity. Obviously, now my main focus is to sell as much as possible, to occupy as much of the profile market as possible.

IN THE MEANTIME, YOU HAVE ALSO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH BOTH THE INTERNAL AND INTERNATIONAL GAMBLING MARKETS. COULD YOU ESTIMATE HOW BUCHAREST STANDS IN THIS DOMAIN, AS COMPARED TO OTHER CAPITAL CITIES?

Referring to the countries in our region, I think Bucharest has the best position. As compared to Budapest, for instance, which I know in detail. There is an Alfastreet subsidiary in Budapest too and of course we communicate with them fairly often.

HAVE YOU PLAYED THE ROULETTE? ARE YOU KEEN ON PLAYING?

I played to test the product and to become familiar with it. To be honest, I’m not a passionate player. I’m just a professional in the field.

HOWEVER, YOU SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN CASINOS, WATCHING THE MOVES, OBSERVING THE PRODUCT…

That’s true, I am present every day in casinos. This is the job requirement.

HOW MUCH TIME ARE YOU LEFT WITH FOR HOME AND FAMILY?

I find time for family too. Precisely to be able to spend more time with my wife and boy, I brought them to Bucharest, nearly three years ago.

DO YOU FIND IT USEFUL TO HAVE A MAGAZINE SUCH AS CASINO IN THE GAMBLING INDUSTRY?

I think it’s very good, I like it a lot and honestly I think it’s very useful.

10 for Dezbracatu

June 2009

This is the already famous section dedicated to black and white questions asked in the company of a media personality. Which by no means comes to saying that Codrut Keghes’s (alias Dezbracatu’) nonconformism does not deserve the maximum grade.

1. HOW MANY SECONDS WOULD YOU NEED TO DROP DEZBRACATU’ AND BECOME KEGHES AGAIN?

If I’m wearing an outfit of Dezbracatu’s and it’s a bit more complex, the changing takes no more than 10 minutes. If I’m just acting like Dezbracatu’, turning into Codrut takes just a few seconds. After so many years of being both me and Dezbracatu’, these changes are no longer so complicated for me.

2. AFTER YOU GET FED UP WITH THE DANDY ATTITUDE, WOULDN’T YOU FEEL GOOD TO BE “BAREFOOT” (“DESCULT”) BY ZAHARIA STANCU?

I have no idea when I will ever get tired of being dandy, but I know I will never get tired of being Dezbracatu’. So, I will never become “Barefoot”. Now, of course I wish I had more time for reading, but considering the agitated life we all lead, only a lucky few find the time for that.

3. AS A GENERAL IDEA, YOU COULD END UP BEING THE SYMBOL OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRISIS. WHAT WOULD IT COST YOU TO PROMOTE YOURSELF AS A GLOBAL BRAND?

I wouldn’t cost me too big of a deal, but it would cost them a lot. I can’t name a figure, I think the brand Dezbracatu’ is priceless, it goes beyond the material side. I’ll sleep on it, it doesn’t seem like a bad idea.

4. DON’T YOU FEEL YOU’RE BEING MADE FUN OF WHEN DURING WINTERTIME AT – 20 DEGREES C SOME WELLDRESSED GUY COMES ASKING “HOW ARE YOU, DEZBRACATU’ (NAKED)?”

If I were holding a can of boiled wine, I would be as hot as the one asking. I am not in the least offended that people on the street call me Dezbracatu’; on the contrary, I feel honored.

5. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT, APART FROM YOUR INNATE CHARM, YOU CAN ATTRACT GIRLS BY THE NAKED APPEAL OF YOUR NICKNAME?

I think that the name, or in this case the nickname is of less importance to girls.

6. TO WHAT EXTENT DOES YOUR OLD PERSONALITY STILL SUIT YOU?

I haven’t changed a bit during these few years. At least not as far as my personality is concerned. Sadly, there have been only physical changes: I’ve grown old.

7. SOME SAY THAT YOU’LL EVENTUALLY GET INTO TROUBLE. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE YOU MOCKED WITH YOUR TV SHOWS?

I already have my share of trouble with my wife. I interpreted a lot of characters and some of them are very dear to me. But I’m definitely not going to stop here.

8. DO YOU STILL FIND THE MOOD FOR JOKES?

Let’s keep in mind that I made a name for myself at the TV series Banc Show, on Prima TV. Now I still make jokes when I have the mood it requires. If I feel out of shape, I prefer not to make the joke, as it lacks in appeal. I like to tell jokes and, most times, I tell them with all my heart, from dusk ’til dawn.

9. WHAT CLASSIC CHARACTER WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO IMPERSONATE IF SERGIU NICOLAESCU MADE A FILM WITH SOME HISTORICAL JOKES ATTACHED?

I would undoubtedly choose Vlad Tepes, to be able to highlight his humor too, not just his dark side.

10. YOU ARE A FRESH DADDY. WHO WILL ENTERTAIN THE BABY’S WORLD – CODRUT, CATALIN, BOTH? OR HIS MOMMY?

His mother is more dedicated. I work a lot and hardly find the time but I try to be there for him as he grows as much as possible.

Unibet open – Live poker tournaments

June 2009

Unibet Open is a concept launched by Unibet Poker in 2007. The first live tournament organized by Unibet took place in november 2007 in Warsaw, and the success registered by this event has leaded to an annual series of tournament under the Unibet Open brand.

In the following year, Unibet Poker organized four new Unibet Open events in Prague, Madrid, Milan and again Warsaw. The number of participants has gradually increased, and it reached 300 players in the Warsaw tournament at the end of 2008.

For 2009, Unibet Open series schedules five tournaments, starting with the tournament that took place in Budapest in march, and continuing with Unibet Open Algarve in may, London in july, Prague in September, and finishing with the Warsaw tournament in december, which has already become a Unibet Open tradition.

After the Budapest event, the second tournament of the year 2009 is announcing to be the greatest event ever organized by Unibet Poker – 400 players will fight for a total prize pool of 600,000 euro in a luxury location, Algarve, Portugal.

The number of Romanian players present at the Unibet Open tournaments is increasing – after Romania was represented by five players in Budapest, in Algarve the number of Romanian players is six, including the former boxing world champion, Mihai Leu. At the same time with the growth of the number of poker players, the results have turned up, with Cristian Boca as top romanian player in Budapest, finishing on the 15th position.

Didn’t get the chance to play for Algarve? Don’t worry, after Algarve, the next Unibet Open tournament will take place in July in London. Over 300 players will then fight for a prize pool of over 750,000 euro. The satelites for Unibet Open London are already live at Unibet Poker! Good luck!

FLAMINGO LAS VEGAS – “AS VEGAS AS VEGAS CAN GET”

June 2009

Property of the famous Harrah’s Entertainment group, Flamingo Las Vegas is located in Las Vegas, Paradise, Nevada, occupying a property of 7,200 square meters, including both the casino and the 3,626-room hotel.

The local people often call it the Pink Hotel, due to the neonpink color of the construction.

The entire theme of the complex reminds of the Art Deco style and also of the modern Miami and South Beach style, while the outer central area is host to an exhibition of flamingo birds, as part of the wildlife habitat of the area.

Flamingo was the third location opened in Nevada Strip, initially being the property of one of the founders of Las Vegas, Charles “Pops” Squires. But the one to finish the Flamingo construction was the renowned head of the Mafia, Benjamin (Bugsy) Siegel, together with his business “partners”.

Siegel opened The Pink Flamingo Hotel&Casino, a construction requiring a total cost of $6 million, on December the 26th 1946.

At that time considered the most luxurious hotel in the world, and definitely the first luxury hotel in Nevada, the property was built 11 km away from downtown Las Vegas. The name of the property came from Virginia Hill, Siegel’s lover who loved to gamble and who was nicknamed Flamingo.

THE FABULOUS FLAMINGO

The management of the casino changed on March 1st 1947, thus becoming The Fabulous Flamingo, and the place began to build a reputation for the shows it performed, which many times had stars among the invited, as well as for the accommodation and services offered to visitors.

Until 1999, the property belonged to the Hilton chain of hotels, after which it became Flamingo Las Vegas, and in 2005 it became a property of Harrah’s.

The Flamingo casino is famous for the movies shot there, the first being the 1960 version of “Ocean’s Eleven”, then followed by “Viva Las Vegas”, in 1964, and by a flashback sequence in the 2001 version of “Ocean’s Eleven”. A Caribbean style location, the casino offers many opportunities of winning to those with a passion for gambling.

The guests of Flamingo have at their disposal the bestknown casino games in the world, from the classic one to the newest ones.

Poker fans – probably the main attraction of the casinos in Vegas, next to the roulette – also benefit from the most interesting versions of this game: Texas Hold’em and Seven Card Stud Poker, as well as some other poker variants fit for rookie and experienced players of this game.

Furthermore, those interested will be able to find special events and Hold’em No Limit or Omaha poker tours, usually programmed during the weekend.

Another main attraction at Flamingo and a long-expected game which was wiped off from the list of casino games for too long is the historic Keno, the background of which goes as far back as two thousand years ago, in China, as it was before the builtup of the Great Chinese Wall.

SLOT-MACHINE PARADISE

The slot-machines room, a genuine Payout Paradise, offers players over 1,600 of the most exciting games currently available on the profile market. Those keen on slot-machines will find here their favorite Hexbreakers or Munsters, as well as progressive games, video poker, video blackjack, but also 2-cent stake progressive.

The rooms for sport bets and races invites the guests of Flamingo Casino in the exciting world of horse-racing and all kinds of sport events; the stakes can be placed in real time, as the action on the great arenas of the world is being watched on huge projection screens fitted inside the rooms and on TV monitors.

The horse and dog races are the ones most popular in the sport bets and racing room at Flamingo.

Martin White – THE ENGLISH GASTRONOMICS TEACHER

June 2009

Martin White is the perfect englishman: pedant, talking very clear, concised and relaxed. Martin is the career chef. He has now 11 years since heís delighting the romanians gourmands with his delicacies. Recently, the englishman is one of the chef masters at the newest casino in Bucharest, the Regent.

YOU ARE, IF WE CONSIDER THE APPRECIATIONS OF THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW YOU, A REAL MASTER IN GASTRONOMICS.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A CASINO, HERE, IN ROMANIA?

I’ve been here already for 11 years, so I’m not new here in Romania.

I worked in Bucharest and then in Sibiu, but my aim was to comeback to Bucharest. I know Sorin very well from the Hilton, because when I worked there he was in the casino and when he asked me if I was interested I said we can talk. One of the reasons I came here was because I have the whole responsibility not only for the kitchen, but also for the restaurant, for the bar, and other areas. So that’s why I choose the casino, and also because we wanted to do something nice and something properly. It’s a nice casino, sure, but we want to have a nice restaurant with a nice service and nice food, we want to have the whole thing. So that’s also something important to me, to do something that I enjoy.

HOW DID YOU END UP TO CHOOSE THIS, LET’S CALL IT, TASTEFUL JOB? WHY MADE YOU CHOOSE THIS JOB?

That goes back a long time, because I’ve been working 29 years, so I left school 31 years ago. I didn’t decide pretty well what I wanted to do until I left school, so I must have been 15 or 16. We had career meetings every week and I saw a video presentation about being a chef. It was something I enjoyed very much, so from the presentation I went to the school, to the college and I started from there. It wasn’t anything from the family, because nobody in my family has a background like this. I was interested and this is what I did.

WHAT KIND OF GASTRONOMIC INFLUENCES WILL HAVE THE MENU FROM REGENT?

In a casino, obviously, the menu is for the people who come here. So, it’s important to arrange it for everybody, so we need to have international cuisine. We need to look after the locals, the Romanians, and also we need to look after the people from the other countries, the Middle East, because the come here a lot, too. So we have to try to fit in everybody.

So, the a la carte menu is very much international, but for the items on the buffet I try to have a variety so that it suits everybody.

It’s important.

WHICH ONE DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE MOST DELICIOUS AND SAVOURY CUISINE IN THE WORLD. WHY?

I like french, because we were taught in french, and I believe that french people have a very good concept for food, and have some very nice dishes and very nice ingredients.

So, for me the french cuisine is very high. And, personally, I like chinese cuisine, because I like to eat chinese. I also like the Middle East and the Far East cuisine.

DO YOU KNOW ANY DETAILS ABOUT THE ROMANIAN CUISINE?

Obviously, I’ve tasted quite a lot over the years and I’ve seen enough since I came here. I don’t know too much about the history, but I know quite a lot of the dish- es, because I see them every day and I taste them, too.

WHAT’S YOUR SPECIALTY?

I don’t specialize in one thing in particular, I specialize in the kitchen, and that involves many things. I don’t have any area in the kitchen that I could say I’m a specialist in. I try to specialize in everything.

DID YOU CREATE ANY DISH, OR DID YOU ADAPT SOMETHING, YOU PUT YOUR SIGNATURE ON SOME KIND OF DISH?

Like any chef, I’m always looking to do something new, something different, and the ideas come from few areas: you might read it in a book, you might see it on television or on the internet, you might go to a restaurant and eat something and then you adapt it to your style, or you make something from your mind. I see things in books and magazines, newspapers and I try them, I adapt things and, also, I try to come with new creations, too. I don’t particularly have a specialized signature dish, but if I can say for this casino, I get the feeling the duck that we do here I can say that is going towards a signature dish.

YOU HAVE AN IMPORTANT INTERNATIONAL TRACK RECORD. DID YOU PARTICIPATE IN ANY PRESTIGIOUS GASTRONOMICAL COMPETITION IN THE WORLD?

I’ve done a few competitions when I was younger, and that is 15- 20 years ago, only in England. I think I managed to get one certificate and, after that, I stopped, because it was to time consuming.

You had to put a lot of practicing beforehand. I mean, when you go to a competition you have a half an hour or an hour to produce something, but you need to practice beforehand, and you need to practice a lot. So, I managed one certificate which I was happy with, but then I stopped because of the time.

DID YOU EVER SAT AT A GAMING TABLE, IN THE CASINO?

I played very little, when I was younger. The idea was nice, but I went and played very small money. It wasn’t really an idea that I was very interested in. The majority of people that I see here, are people who come regular, but I’m not a casino player, although I like it.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SAY TO THE ROMANIAN PEOPLE THROUGH CASINO MAGAZINE?

My message is a culinary message.

I would like to see the people here, in the restaurant, and I would them to enjoy our food. Although we are not the main part in the casino, I think we are an important part here, and I want people to come here to enjoy the food. I want them to gamble of course, but I want them to enjoy the food. They eat well here and we look after them!

Miss Vesuvius 2009 – Anda Mocanu

June 2009

Like a Roman empress, in black and white, Anda lives her moment of glory, facing Vesuvius, over the aeons.

Miss Vesuvius – yes, she is the one – convinced the jury that beauty erupts, transcending from the aura of the tumultuous Neapolitan landscapes. Self confident, voluntary, temperamental.

It’s what the lines of Anda’s face suggest, her chin gently pushing forward, broad curls of her heavy hair falling down on the shoulders in the brightness of ebony light.

The same Latin restlessness unfolds from the elegant firmness of her body, the relaxed stances, and the air of a certain distinction.

And because Anda Mocanu is Miss Vesuvius 2009 and Vesuvius is a casino and a casino is, before all, yearning, chance and fulfilled dream, the good things that have redefined her on the course of this struggle of femininity can be assimilated with a victory at the playing table, where she, Anda, received the winning ace.

Synot Holding SHOWS INTEREST IN THE ROMANIAN GAMBLING MARKET

June 2009

Synot Holding, set up in 1990 as main business of the Czech family Valenta, has rapidly become a well-known brand at European level. We tried to learn straight from the source a few details related to the way in which this business is defined.

WHAT IS THE DEVELOPMENT LEVEL OF THE GAMBLING INDUSTRY IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC?

The gambling industry is well developed in the Czech Republic, fact confirmed by the significant number of international companies operating on this market. Among all post-communist countries, Czech Republic is situated at a very high level in terms of gaming industry development, of regulations and level of gaming equipment.

In fact, we are not very far from the West- European countries and I can even say we have left some of them behind.

ARE YOU AWARE OF THE DEVELOPMENT LEVEL OF THIS PHENOMENON IN ROMANIA?

I noticed an unprecedented growth in the gaming industry in Romania in the last few years.

There is no doubt that your recent adherence to the European Union has accelerated an entire process of economical transformation of the country and the rapid increase of the number of gaming machines operating in Romania underlines this trend. On the other hand, there is still a great number of such machines to be replaced because they are very old.

CAN YOU DRAW A COMPARISON FROM THIS POINT OF VIEW BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES?

Comparing these two countries from the point of view of the equipment in the gaming industry, I have to admit that the Czech Republic is slightly ahead of Romania. The main reason is that many companies have already implemented the VTL systems in the Czech Republic, systems offering countless possibilities to players and operators. From the point of view of the market, I reckon the two countries are similar in terms of the large number of operators.

BIG SIX – The Wheel of Fortune

June 2009

Known by most players as “The Wheel of Fortune” or “The Money Wheel”, Big Six has been a familiar game for a long time and one of the most popular attractions of carnivals in times past.

One of the variants of this game lead to the creation of the Roulette, but the vertical version, the big wheel, remained a special attraction for festivals because it could be seen by all the crowds gathered. The tradition has been kept to this day and the Wheel made it to many of the world’s casinos and it was even the object of a TV competition-show.

Origins

Its origins go back a long way, as far back to the battles after which the victorious soldiers would often play the wheel on the things confiscated from the enemies they had just defeated. Eager to avoid blood spilling among troops, their commanders often encouraged the use of these games in order to settle disputes. A spear would be driven into the ground, by the wheel, to serve as reference point and each participant to the game would make a mark between two segments of the wheel. The wheel would then be spinned fast and the soldier with the closest mark to the reference point would win the prize, no fighting needed. And because this way they managed to forget all about swords, the former soldiers took their new game to their rural festivals where the crop harvest was celebrated.

And yet it spins

The wheel is divided into a number of segments, separated by small rods. Each segment has an associated number. Within the game, the wheel is spinned around by the dealer and the winning segment is indicated by means of a fixed pointer mounted on a flexible rubber or leather support moving along the separators between the segments, in order to create friction and help slow the wheel down.

However, there are other types of Wheels, for instance those divided into segments using different symbols and having different stakes as a symbol is selected. The best-known version of the Big Six Wheel, especially throughout casinos in the USA, is the one with the symbols of the $1, $2, $5 and $20 bills, plus other two symbols, usually a joker and the casino’s logo, these two last ones appearing just once on the wheel. The players place their bets on the symbols and each bill pays the stake multiplied by the value of the respective bill. The joker and the logo pay 40, respectively 45 times the bet placed. The wheel has 54 segments in the USA and 52 in Australia, representing six groups of the six main stakes. The number of segments in each group is indirectly proportional to the stakes it offers, and so the higher the stake, the smaller the number of segments on the wheel. The object of the game is to guess which group of segments on the wheel will stop by the pointer as the wheel stops.

One can bet on one or several numbers at the same time.

Advantage, casino

The advantage of the house or the proportion of stakes the casino expects to win at this game is one of the greatest of all games played in casinos. So, the Wheel of Fortune, or the Big Six Wheel, is considered by far one of the “worst” games in casinos, next to the game of Keno. The advantage of the house spans from 11% to 24%.

As such, given the very big advantage of the house, the biggest chance of winning at this game, according to gambling specialists, belongs to those who don’t play at all. However, for the fans of the Wheel – most of them newcomers in the casino – there are a few pieces of advice so as not to loose everything. The $1 and $5 segments give the house the smallest advantage if chosen by the one placing the bet. On the other hand, if you spend some time watching the wheel and the one spinning it, you could, to a certain extent, understand the course of the game.

So, you can try to calculate where the wheel will stop next time and you can bet on a few segments around that respective spot. But you won’t see many players betting high stakes at this game.
