Gyula Csortán is the general manager of the company Alfastreet Trade Romania. A specialist who learned the secrets of the gambling industry as he went along. He is a math teacher, was born in Sfântu Gheorghe, graduated university in Budapest and makes money go round in Bucharest.
Mr. CSORTÁN, HOW DID THE HISTORY OF ALFASTREET ROMANIA BEGIN?
The owners of our company came to Romania a few years ago to find a gambling market under full development. They tested the opportunities, saw that the business could be developed and contacted Alfastreet in order to import the electronic roulettes.
They brought them in the country and they became very popular.
Then we changed the name of the company, setting up Alfastreet Trade Romania, a subsidiary of the mother company in Slovenia.
IN WHAT YEAR DID YOU SET UP THE ROMANIAN SUBSIDIARY?
Last year, in April. The company that was operating in Romania and selling Alfastreet roulettes had become an exclusive dealer for this product.
We thought of changing the name in order to create a visible link to the mother company and the object of our activity.
WHEN DID YOU BECOME A GENERAL MANAGER OF THE COMPANY?
In November 2008. Before that, I used to be the technical manager of the company. I coordinated everything related to the technical business of the business: mounting the roulettes, ensuring in-warranty service and coordinating the team of technicians.
HOW MANY SUCH ROULETTES MADE BY ALFASTREET DID YOU SELL IN ROMANIA?
The number is made up of many hundreds. I can’t tell you the exact figure.
WHICH IS YOUR MOST VALUED CLIENT?
Ritzio. We sold them more than 100 machines. Last year alone they bought approximately 70-80 roulettes from us. Olympic is another important client.
THE ELECTRONIC ROULETTE, A PRODUCT THAT SELLS…
Like hot cakes I could say.
BUT WHAT IS THE SITUATION NOW THAT THE CRISIS IS AFFECTING EVERYONE?
It affects us too, to a certain extent, but not dramatically. In this period we focused our efforts on the service activity. We concluded contracts with the companies that bought products from us but had expired warranties. The contracts are subscription-type, either for repairs or periodic and occasional inspections. As previously said, we also ensure in-warranty service for the products bought through Alfastreet Romania. Furthermore, we provide spare parts imported directly from the producer.
ARE YOU THINKING OF VARYING THE RANGE OF IMPORTED PRODUCTS FOR DISTRIBUTION ON THE ROMANIAN MARKET?
Yes. We considered this aspect and decided to also import the booker-table. It hasn’t yet been released on the market, but we presented it in December to our clients. The moment it is officially released, we will make a serious promotion.
YOU HOPE IT WILL BE AS POPULAR WITH THE GAME PARLORS AS THE ROULETTE?
To be honest, I am developing an entire marketing strategy based on this product. I am sure it will be on high demand.
HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES THE TEAM YOU LEAD INCLUDE? A TEAM WHICH, BY ALL APPEARANCES, IS HIGHLY DEMANDED.
Not very many. 10-12 people.
Indeed, very busy. We are now planning to hire some more technicians, once we extend the service activity. As far as the workload is concerned, we are lucky. Our roulette is on high demand within parlors. Players hold it as their favorite.
In very many locations, where there are several types of roulette, clients prefer our product.
WHAT IS YOUR BASE PROFESSION, MR. CSORTÁN?
I am a math teacher. I taught for 10 years in Sfântu Gheorghe, starting with year 1995. Then I was forced to leave the educational system. You know how the salaries are…
HOW DID YOU ADAPT TO THE ACTIVITY YOU ARE CURRENTLY DEVELOPING? WAS IT DIFFICULT?
Yes, it certainly was. I came from a totally different environment.
Then, when we started to sell the roulettes, we didn’t know the markets. I learned each single part of the machines from the technicians.
WHAT ARE YOUR FURTHER OBJECTIVES?
For me, this position is a great challenge. I thought a great deal of what I have to do. General management is totally different from the technical section, where I worked ever since I joined this field of activity. Obviously, now my main focus is to sell as much as possible, to occupy as much of the profile market as possible.
IN THE MEANTIME, YOU HAVE ALSO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH BOTH THE INTERNAL AND INTERNATIONAL GAMBLING MARKETS. COULD YOU ESTIMATE HOW BUCHAREST STANDS IN THIS DOMAIN, AS COMPARED TO OTHER CAPITAL CITIES?
Referring to the countries in our region, I think Bucharest has the best position. As compared to Budapest, for instance, which I know in detail. There is an Alfastreet subsidiary in Budapest too and of course we communicate with them fairly often.
HAVE YOU PLAYED THE ROULETTE? ARE YOU KEEN ON PLAYING?
I played to test the product and to become familiar with it. To be honest, I’m not a passionate player. I’m just a professional in the field.
HOWEVER, YOU SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN CASINOS, WATCHING THE MOVES, OBSERVING THE PRODUCT…
That’s true, I am present every day in casinos. This is the job requirement.
HOW MUCH TIME ARE YOU LEFT WITH FOR HOME AND FAMILY?
I find time for family too. Precisely to be able to spend more time with my wife and boy, I brought them to Bucharest, nearly three years ago.
DO YOU FIND IT USEFUL TO HAVE A MAGAZINE SUCH AS CASINO IN THE GAMBLING INDUSTRY?
I think it’s very good, I like it a lot and honestly I think it’s very useful.
